Modern Theatre Dance

Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style often seen on the stages of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps, and turns which all need strength and flexibility. This is a highly energetic dance style and develops essential dance skills for stage and commercial dance.

 

Tap

Tap dance is one of the most rhythmical forms of dance originating from African tribal dance, Scottish, Irish and English clog dancing, hornpipes and jigs. The dancer uses their feet to strike the floor, beating out different rhythms, with dancers wearing tap shoes which have small metal plates on the toe and heel to give the distinctive sound. Tap dance is a theatrical art form often seen on stage in musicals.

Jazz

Jazz dance is an umbrella term encompassing several different styles of dance. It continues to evolve and blend with other dance styles – for example, street jazz and theatre dance. Jazz dancing is a form that showcases a dancer’s ability and originality. All jazz dancers interpret and perform moves and steps in their own unique way. This type of dancing consists of fancy footwork, big leaps, and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.

Lyrical

Lyrical jazz is a pure interpretation of music and should therefore show fluidity, resistance, suspension, relaxation, purpose and create physical shapes that are aesthetically pleasing. Lyrical technique demonstrates a sustained technique, extension, and continuity of line where relevant and fluidity in the movement. A range and richness in dynamics should be ever present and emotive response should come from within.

 Classical Contemporary

Contemporary dance is offered to develop student’s movement skills and vocabulary while stretching physicality and creativity. Pupil’s learn how their breath can inform movement, with weight, swing, suspension, and release applied. Lesson’s explore themes and the use of contraction, extension, and relaxation. Space is explored in a multi layered way including, levels, planes, and facings. Fun and informative, this class also provides additional technique support for those taking classical ballet classes and GCSE or A Level Dance.

 

Performance opportunities are offered to pupils alongside their dance training as well as audition opportunities for the gifted and talented.
